In 1983 the Big Sable Point Lighthouse was listed in the National
Register of Historic Places. It was almost too late. The seawall that
was built in 1943 was breached in the 1970's. Waves from the lake were
threatening the foundation of the tower.
The site was unmanned and abandoned. Mother
nature and common vandals were adding to the damage caused by lack of
maintenance.
After receiving the historic places listing, groups came together to
begin the enormous task of refurbishing the light to its former glory.
The light no longer has the original Fresnel lens. There is a 300mm
plastic optic still in place. The lighthouse is in the state park and is
open during the season.
